Paddington Bear Facts

Michael Bond is the author of  Paddington Bear, he created him in 1958.

He found the inspiration from a teddy bear he bought his wife on Christmas Eve, the teddy had been the last one on the shelf and he bought it as it looked so alone.

He called it Paddington as they lived around the corner from Paddington Station in London.

Paddington Bear stories were initially illustrated by Peggy Fortnum. However. there has since been eight illustrators working on Paddington at different times.

Paddington Bear is from Deepest Darkest Peru, he was brought up by his Aunt Lucy. He was orphaned when he was only a few weeks old when an earthquake erupted in Peru. When Aunt Lucy moved into a home for Retired Bears, she taught her nephew English. She then sent him to live in England by stowing him away on a cargo ships life boat.

Paddington's name in Peru is Pastuso.

Paddington was found by Mr and Mrs Brown at Paddington Station with a label around his neck written by Aunt Lucy saying ' Please Look after this bear. Thank You'.

They took Paddington home to 32 Windsor Gardens, Notting Hill where they lived in a semi-detached house. Also in the Brown family were Jonathan and Judy, Mr & Mrs Browns' children.

Paddington's favourite food is Marmalade Sandwiches. He carries a jar in his suitcase along with important paperwork and scrapbook of memories made by Aunt Lucy.

Underneath his hat is an emergency marmalade sandwich.

If you go to Paddington Station in London, you will be able to see a statue of Paddington Bear sitting on his suitcase.
